HMRC has effectively contracted-out a lot of its routine work back to the taxpayer ensuring staff are free for other duties – like tax investigations.
The number of investigations by the various tax authorities has increased significantly - the Government wants to maximise tax revenue without raising headline tax rates and this is one way to achieve it.
